Beautyblender has an open cell structure that fills with small amounts of water when wet. This allows the sponge to be "full" so the makeup product is on the surface of the sponge instead of being absorbed inside, so you can use less product each time. When wet, the sponge doubles in size, becoming even softer. It returns to its original size when it is air dried.
